All you young folk only know the bike brand Nukeproof since it was bought and became a UK brand. But the original Nukeproof, from my neighbor state of Michigan in the USA, was a different beast. They truly were a very forward thinking company. The very first carbon fiber components I’d ever seen, and owned, were their hubs with carbon shells, their handlebars, and seatposts if I recall. The hubs came first, and they were just the coolest thing. In a market where colorful CNC aluminum parts ruled, the Nuke hubs were silver with full carbon shells. And, not the smooth black carbon of today, but that rough fully exposed woven weave that really makes the material stand out. They were light, expensive, and pretty rare. So naturally I had to have them. Oh what I’d do to still have that set of wheels. I had my cool shop of the day, Straight Up Cyclery (I should do a mini doc on this shop, it was incredible, and very different from any other shop before, during, or since) build me a wheelset with Campagnolo rims, Nuke hubs, and who knows what spokes, with alloy nipples. They were very expensive and would probably still be rolling today…I hope they are actually.
Today there’s a great article online about the new Nukeproof bikes that Bart Brentjen’s KMC factory team will be using this year. Ridley are out, Nukeproof is in. Both brands are owned by the same company, so it’s not really a huge change at all.
Our own Kelsey Urban, who has truly been making a run for top US woman the last few years, is on that team and there’s a great overview of her bike. It looks like all the other modern XC bikes, but since the team uses TRP mechanical drivetrains, her bike has the gen 1 Sram Eagle cassette on back. TRP makes a nice cassette, so not sure why she’d have that. I’ve seen other KMC team bikes recently that had the gold TRP in back. Odd. I have 5 of those cassettes and must admit they are light and bombproof.

Great selection of non-Sram and Shimano for a change. I sure with more bikes were not so cookie-cutter like these.
Good luck to Urban this year, I’m rooting for her.
