UCI Major USA Races

It’s January 2024, and there are still no dates for this years Pro XCT…and the first race is us

ually in April.

2023 USA PRO XCT (I still call them NORBAs…)

At one point in the distant past, the NORBA series of mtb races ruled the world. The European riders came HERE to race the best. And we were the best. So while this series, now called the PRO XCT is the premier U.S. series, it no longer commands the best of the best. That is reserved for the Euro-centric World Cup.

But, there are plenty of talented and die-hard racers who race many of these and truly love the sport.

USA National Championships

  • So many dates!

BMX Nationals are in March! So things get rolling early.

Click here for the official page for the XC events.

Marathon XC is in June in Alabama, and the XCO and XCC are both in July in Pennsylvania, so nice mid-summer races.

 More Way Cool XC Races

Cape Epic

  • March 17-24

One of my absolute favorite events to watch every year. For a few years, it really seemed Nino and whomever he partnered with was going to win every year for ever. But not so fast. Nino and crew have had their work cut out for them. Newcomers very dedicated and ready for action are spoiling the fun.

Pan American Cross Country Cup

  • May 8 – 12, 2024

Awesome! The US gets the Pan Am championships this year. In beautiful Utah no less.

2024 Epic Rides Series

A great series of three very tough challenges throughout the year and at several locations.

Leadville Race Series

  • There are seven qualifying races before the official Leadville Trail 100 race, starting in March. Click here to learn more.
  • Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race – August 10, 2024 – Leadville, CO

Chequamegon 40

  • September 14, 2024 – Hayward, WI

One of the oldest organized MTB races in the country. This race has legendary status for us midwestern old-timers. I finally took a shot at it for the 25th anniversary race. Greg Lemond came over from Minnesota and rode the race with his son. I loved it, and had probably one of my best days on the bike for some reason. I hammered the entire 40 miles.

My goal is to return for another try in 2024. Some pretty big name US racers will be at the front once again.

Iceman Cometh Challenge

  • November 2, 2024 – Traverse City, MI area

Another upper midwest classic. This race along with Chequamegon has been a must-do event for many years. It draws some pretty well known US professionals every year.

I did this one time back in 2016 and unlike the best day on a bike at Cheq, this was my worst day. I was out of shape, and the weather was so bad I ended up taking 5 hours to do a 3 hour and under race.

I got in at the last minute for the 2023 race, and had a blast. Perfect weather, I was in better shape, and finished 2:45…which looking back, should have been better. So I’m planning on trying again for a 2:30 or better. With the right training, and fresh knowledge of how and when to make up time on the big crowds on the course, I think that’s more than realistic.

WORS (Wisconsin Off Road Series, USA)

  • May – August each year

One of the oldest state series in the U.S. I started driving the 2-3 hours north a few years ago because I realized how awesome these races are. Very well attended. They have a huge NICA school-age racing program that is paying off. At least half of the racers on any given race day are under the age of 19. Grade school, high school and all the families come out to race XC. It’s extremely cool for an old guy like myself to see this happening. We desperately need young racers to help keep the sport moving forward. There are only so many old people that can keep this going!

And, Trek bought the series from the long-time owner and has really taken it up a notch.

CAMBR (Northern Illinois Off Road Series, USA)

  • July 28 – Raceway Rally, Carpentersville IL
  • August 11 – Paul Douglas Pursuit, Hoffman Estates IL
  • August 25 – Palos Meltdown, Willow Springs IL

Other European Races

2024 Swiss Bike Cup

  • Starting in March, ending in September, in Switzerland

Since so many of the top Elite racers hail from Switzerland, these races are often just like world cups. They can be found streaming online if you look hard enough.

2024 UEC European Championships

  • May, 2024

Another great world cup level race. Many of the top racers try to grab the jersey each year. Some of the best racers also sit this one out depending on their yearly goals. But always great to watch.

2024 Shimano MTB Super Cup Massi

  • La Nucia Alicante – Feb. 10-11, 2024
  • Banyoles, Girona, Feb. 24-25, 2024
  • Santa Susanna, Barcelona, April 7, 2024
  • Sabinanigo, Huesca, April 28, 2024
  • Baza, Granada, May 5, 2024
  • Naturland, St. Julia De Loria Andorra, June 15, 2024
  • Girona, Sea Otter Europe, Sept. 22, 2024

The Shimano Super Cup Massi is a prestigious high-level XCO circuit made up of seven UCI HC & C1 category tests. A circuit that will score for the International MTB Catalan Cup with a higher score than the rest of the tests according to their highest level. This is the most prestigious XCO circuit in Southern Europe and, together with that of the International MTB Catalan Cup, one of the most UCI points distributed around the world.
