Retro Rant – Custom paint jobs ruled!

April 21, 2021|Retro Rant|

Okay, there's no hiding the fact that after 30 years of XC racing, and buying bikes and gear, that eventually you'll miss the way things used to be. I was reminded of that in two ways recently. First, I was digging around in my crawl space when I saw my vintage 1991 custom steel hardtail frame and fork, safely wrapped in bubble wrap and in a fully heated crawl space, sitting nearby. This 1991 frameset was brazed together than Doug Curtiss, of Curtlo Cycles. I'll save the history [...]

Data analysts predict Olympics, no Van der Poel? Hmm.

April 20, 2021|News|

Well, it seems a company called Gracenote has done some number crunching, and it's predictions for the 2021 Olympics, if they happen at all? XCO men's category: Nino Schurter (Switzerland) Jordan Sarrou (France) Mathias Flückiger (Switzerland) XCO women's category: Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (France) Jolanda Neff (Switzerland) Kate Courtney (USA)   That seems way too obvious to me. I hate to say it, but aside from PFP in the women's category, they sure aren't taking into account the most recent winners of pre-World Cup events. I think this a perfect [...]

Euro pre-World Cup races are in the books.

April 19, 2021|News|

Well, I don't ever recall in years past racers all flocking to smaller xco races the way they have this Spring. Italy, Austria, wherever they've been. I've watched 4 or 5 of them already, and since so many of the top racers have participated, it's become no different than real Wold Cups. One takeaway is for certain, at least on the women's side, the young ones are hungry. The old guard it seems has some serious competition to worry about. Loana Lecomte, Laura Stigger, Isla Short, Mona Mitterwallner, [...]

Welcome

September 4, 2019|News|

Welcome to Short Travel Magazine! We're launching this channel to focus on cross-country mountain biking. There are many great websites and YouTube channels out there for mountain biking. Heck, there are great ones for road biking that I enjoy. But, my true love of cycling started when I began racing XC in 1991. The sport was still new, and it's heros and stars were still being determined. Bike technology was going crazy, and the races were popping up everywhere. NORBA became the world standard for XC racing, and [...]

World Champs a Wrap

September 4, 2019|News|

World Champs a Wrap Well, that was kind of a, dare I say, boring World Champs? I thought Jolanda and Nino would take the titles. And I predicted PFP would be the one that could steal it away from Jolanda. And well, that was what went down. Of course I was rooting for our own world champ, Kate Courtney. Could she pull it out again as an underdog? It was not to be of course, but 5th place is still a fantastic result. Not sure what happened at [...]
